This was the first trip to a Canadian shield lake for John Benhart, who wanted to share the experience with his two young grandsons, Alan Benhart and Joseph Benhart. Also along for the trip was John's friend Gary Hampton. John went all-out to make sure this trip was a memorable trip for the boys - new rods, reels, lures, GPS and digital cameras. Never having fished for walleye before, it didn't take long for them to get into they rhythm and start landing fish. Being an experienced angler, Gary was their patient instructor. Gary and the boys racked-up numbers, Grandpa John put them in their place landing and releasing a 28 inch walleye along with his other catches.

Hasse group from Bear Lake MI, St. Joseph MI, Coloma MI. We first met Dave Gish at Granite Hill Lake, a fly-in out of White River Ontario in 1964. He had the cabin next to ours. One night my brother, Mark, and I were walking out of the cabin door after dinner when Dave asked us if we wanted to see a bear. A black bear was behind our cabin eating popcorn someone had thrown out the week before. The owner of the camp shot the bear and that's how we met Dave Gish. I was 11 years old and Mark was 9 years old. Dave told my Dad, Jack, that he was just buying his own camp and wanted us to try it. We came to Flindt Landing Camp for the first time in 1966, first week of June. We returned in 1967 and 1968. In 1992 my brother Mark and I decided we should start going back to Canada for a fishing trip. We started looking at a lot of different lodges not even thinking Flindt Landing was still in business. We found a map with a lot of camps on it and lo & behold there was Flindt Landing Camp. We called Dave and he remembered us, no kidding! He told us things we did and saw back in the 60's. It was uncanny. We made reservations for the first week of June 1993, twenty-five years after our last trip to Flindt Landing. We have been back every-other year since!

Jay Martin remains the undefeated champion of their group, each year catching the largest walleye. This time he's on the Trophy Board with a 24 inch walleye he caught and released. The Martin party had to fight the elements most of the week, three days of solid rain, blowing winds from the north, temperatures 50 to 55 degrees. But, they caught plenty of walleye. Dan was reeling in a 17 inch walleye when a 30 inch pike went after it. Annie tried to net them both, but the pike spooked. Dan kept reeling and the pike came back again, its hunger outweighing its instinct to flee. Annie scooped the net a second time, landing them both to be measured and released - the walleye for another chance to flee the pike, the pike for another chance at a walleye meal. Their last day at camp they sipped their morning coffee watching a caribou swim in front of their cabin - the perfect ending for a week of wilderness fishing.

Alex Krall was using a pink jig and leech when he landed a 26 inch walleye. Lyle Krall fought a 29 inch walleye for ten minutes using a closed-face reel with no drag. He kept pushing the release button to give it line while holding the line between his fingers for drag. Open faced spinning reel next year, Lyle? Jordan Krall fished exclusively with a custom made Flindt River Rod that he won in the Flindt Landing trophy drawing in 2008. He must have said ten times during the week how much he loves fishing with the rod. This was his first year using a spinning reel and he said he will never go back to a casting reel. Jordan is on the Board again this year with a 27 inch walleye he caught using an orange jig and leech. His guide was friend John Severson. Along with the 27 inch, their two boats caught all nice size walleye 18-20 inches that morning plus a 22 and 23 incher, for a total of 51 walleye in two hours. They averaged over 100 walleye per day. They fought the rain and constantly changing wind directions. "Great time, great week, a pleasure to be here." All walleye 18 inches and over were released.
