Red Lake, located at the end of Highway 105, consists of six communities - Balmertown, Cochenour, Madsen, McKenzie Island, Starratt-Olsen and Red Lake and is the most northwesterly municipality in Ontario. Primary sources of employment in the area include small scale logging, support services for the many mines that surround the town and tourism specializing in hunting and fishing. Red Lake is known as the "Norseman Capital of the World", which refers to the Noorduyn Norseman aircraft which played an integral part in the area's development. An annual festival celebrating these aircraft is held each July.

With the discovery of gold in 1926, the town grew and flourished and in 1936, Red Lake's Howey Bay was the busiest airport in the world. The current mine owned by Goldcorp, now boasts it has the world's richest grade gold ore.

Attractions in Red Lake include the local museum, golf, swimming, several nearby parks including Pakwash Provincial Park and Woodland Caribou Park. With it's many lakes and rivers, Red Lake is a fantastic place for fishing species such as walleye, northern pike, lake trout and whitefish. The many forested areas adjoining the community offer hunters an opportunity at moose, bear, duck and grouse. Trapping still takes place as well.
